Three big names just bet that AI should stop chatting and start deciding
A lot of production AI work is just classification, routing, and checks. A small calibrated model can beat a chat model on cost and latency for those jobs.
In about a month, “decision models” became a real category. You give them a state and a fixed set of questions. They return a probability for each option. No text. No parsing. No chat.
This week’s proof:
- TypeSafe AI raised $870M at a $7.5B valuation for Jev. a16z led. The company launched Jev on September 15 and says a third of the Fortune 500 already use it.
- Cloudflare shipped open-weights rivals: Clef (27B) and Clef-flash (9B). Apache 2.0, self-hostable. It also cut the price of Clef-flash below Jev.
- Microsoft entered with Decision-1, its own fast decision model.
My read: a lot of production AI work is just classification, routing, and checks. A small calibrated model can beat a chat model on cost and latency for those jobs. Open weights make it safer to test.
Your pick: if you run extraction, moderation, or routing on an LLM, try the same workflow on Clef-flash this week.
12 months: decision APIs become the default for structured tasks.
24 months: every major cloud ships a decision model family. Prices keep falling.
36 months: agent systems split into planners that chat and deciders that score.
Why I may be wrong: Jev’s adoption numbers are unaudited, and a $7.5B valuation weeks after launch still looks like froth. Real category, or this quarter’s hype?
