A $2 trillion IPO on $4.6 billion of revenue. The fight over Anthropic’s books is on
The price tag is noise. The event is the signal. A frontier lab is about to open its books.
Anthropic is heading toward the Nasdaq. It filed a confidential draft S-1 back in June. (anthropic.com/news/confidential-draft-s1-sec) Reports say it is looking for a $2 trillion valuation and might list before Thanksgiving. New Constructs called it “the most ridiculous IPO of 2026” and values the company closer to $150 billion. (newconstructs.com/anthropic-is-the-most-ridiculous-ipo-of-2026)
The leaked numbers explain the fight. 2025 revenue was about $4.6 billion. The net loss was $42 billion. A big chunk of that loss is a non-cash accounting charge, but the operating loss was still over $8 billion. To justify $2 trillion, the company would need something close to twice Nvidia’s recent annual profit. (cnbc.com/2026/10/07/anthropic-will-be-most-ridiculous-ipo-of-year-analyst-says.html)
My read: the price tag is noise. The event is the signal. A frontier lab is about to open its books. AI claims will meet audited numbers. That matters more than another model launch this year.
Your pick: do not chase day one. Wait for the full S-1. Look at revenue against compute spend and how concentrated the customers are.
12 months: Anthropic’s quarterly reports become the AI sector’s reality check.
24 months: every frontier lab faces the same pressure to show real numbers.
36 months: AI valuations track audited unit economics more than demos.
Why I may be wrong: New Constructs has called bad IPOs before and been right. If this debut fails hard, does it mark the peak of AI hype?
