Kolibri is a new open model from Aleph Alpha. I wouldn’t put it high on the list for most Indian teams

It supports English and German, with 78B total parameters and 3B active parameters. The license is Apache 2.0. aleph-alpha.com/en/blog/kolibri-has-landed-a-sovereign-open-weight-model
The listed minimum hardware is two A100 80GB GPUs or two H100 GPUs. The weights alone need about 78 GB of memory. signalstack.news/blog/aleph-alpha-kolibri-open-weight-model

My read is that it’s aimed at German public sector work and regulated industries. If you serve those clients, it may be worth a test.

For everyone else, I’d start with the models you can already run. Check how they handle your users’ language and tasks before adding another model to the list.

Here’s what I expect:
12 months: More models focus on a specific language and local requirements.
24 months: More buyers ask where and how a model was trained.
36 months: More regions have models built for their regulated industries.

I could be wrong about how useful Kolibri will be outside that market. The benchmarks come from Aleph Alpha, and independent tests could change the picture. A German client could also make it relevant to your business.

Which language do current models struggle with in your product?
